Metro Mayor Steve Rotherham has announced plans to develop new stations on the Merseyrail network.

Over the past six years the region has seen two modern developed stations located in Maghull and Kirkby, as well as new state of the art trains.

The new proposal will appear as the biggest expansion to the local rail in decades.

Updated transport links are set to be built at Woodchurch (Wirral), Daresbury (Halton), Carr Mill (St Helens) and Baltic Triangle (Liverpool).

The more central Baltic Triangle location is due to be built on the former St James Station by 2027, as well as plans for increased timetabling across the region by 2028.

Improvements to entrance at Moorfields station will also be underway as a part of the  Mayor’s ambitions to revolutionise local rail.

The strive is towards faster, cheaper, cleaner, and easier transport.

Mayor Rotherham said: “Since I’ve been Mayor, I’ve worked around the clock to give our region what Londoners get to enjoy every day: a reliable, accessible, affordable and integrated network that helps, rather than hinders people getting about. But I know that in some parts of our region, Liverpool can feel as distant and inaccessible as London. I’m working to put that right, bringing local people closer to each other and to the opportunities we’re creating.

Cllr Paul Stuart, Wirral Council leader,  added: “Trains provide our residents with a vital transport link to the outside world and it is great to see Steve demonstrate his ambition for our area with an investment that will connect people to jobs, training opportunities and each other for years to come.”

The Woodchurch area of the Wirral holds a population of over 8,000 but finds the nearest station in the area of Upton.

The project will help to support the regeneration of work in the peninsula, as an investment creating connections and opportunities for more people.

Mr Stuart said: “Woodchurch has long been identified as a prime location for a new train station and I am delighted that Steve has announced this addition to our local rail network.”
