Widnes Vikings have this afternoon confirmed that head coach, Kieron Purtill, has resigned from the Championship club.

Purtill was appointed at the start of the 2019 season and guided the Vikings to an 11th place finish despite a 12 point deduction.

It is believed that the former Leigh scrum-half has decided to take up an offer at a Super League club as part of their backroom staff for the 2020 campaign.

In a statement, Widnes expressed that they are “extremely disappointed” with the timing of the decision with preparations in full swing for the start of the new season.

The club did confirm that they will be on the look-out for a new head coach but will not  panic and will make sure that the appointment is in the “best interest of the club’s future.”

The club did also confirm that they will not make any further announcements on the matter.
