The Liverpool Senior Cup has got underway, with the first game taking place last night (Monday) featuring Runcorn Town.
Runcorn beat their fellow Merseysiders AFC Liverpool at home 2-1 to secure their place in the second round of the cup.
The competition features professional and semi-professional football teams from all across Merseyside, who compete in a knock-out style tournament to be crowned Liverpool Senior Cup champions.
Since the first year the competition was held in the 1882-83 season, there has only been 12 years where there has not been a winning team, most recently from 2019-22, due to the covid pandemic.
Everton currently leads the tally of most wins by teams, having been crowned 46 times in the 129 years the competition has took place, and Liverpool are a close second with 41 wins.
Marine were the team of success in the 2023-24 season when they bested City of Liverpool 2-0 to secure the trophy; they were also the winners of the season before, beating Runcorn Linnets 4-3 on penalties after a 0-0 draw.
The contest continues this evening (Tuesday), with three more first round fixtures, all set to kick-off at 19:45.
These include Prescot Cables at home to Burscough, Maghull at home to Widnes and Warrington Rylands at home to Skelmersdale United.
