How to help Liverpool charities this Christmas

Christmas is a time for giving, whether it be to your friends, family or loved ones.

But Christmas isn’t the easiest time of year for everyone. Thousands of people in Liverpool alone are homeless, terminally ill or struggling mentally.

Christmas is the perfect opportunity to donate to those less fortunate.

On that note, this will be an overview of some local charities with great missions this festive season.

1. Liverpool University Hospitals Charity – Elf Hunt

Loren Slade, Events Fundraiser for the charity, told Merseynewslive: “We exist to raise funds for our staff and patients to improve and enhance all our hospital services above and beyond the NHS promise of care.”

Their funds aid all of their Liverpool sites (The Royal, Aintree and Broadgreen), with each and every penny going towards the health and wellbeing of patients, their families and staff.

“All funds raised will ensure all our patients across Aintree, The Royal and Broadgreen are given a gift on Christmas morning.” – Loren Slade

Patients come from across the North to Liverpool’s hospitals, and the charity ensures they get the care they deserve.

This Christmas, LUH Charity are hosting an ‘Elf Hunt’ on December 4 at Allerton Manor Golf Club.

The hunt involves a trail of 15 elves to find in order to gain your prize and certificate. Along the festive route, there will be many merry activities for the young ones to take part in.

After visiting the elf trail, there will be plentiful activities to take part in, including ‘knock the elf off the shelf’, polaroid photos with Santa and an elf shop.

Loren also informed MNL: “Fancy dress is encouraged with a prize for the best dressed… including the grown-up’s!”

2. Charles Thompson’s Mission – Sleep Out

Charles Thompson’s Mission is a charity based in Birkenhead, dedicated to ‘Christ’s love to the poor and homeless of Wirral’.

Having been around since 1892, Charles Thompson’s Mission has committed to providing food, clothes, care and support to those living in poverty.

This Christmas the charity has many missions.

They have the ‘Food Hamper Appeal’ to provide hampers for families, couples and individuals who are in need.

Foods including pasta, tinned foods, mince pies and Christmas pudding are encouraged (with a 2022 use-by date).

They also have a toy collection mission suitable for children aged 0-16 years-old.

With many collection points across the Wirral and an Amazon Wishlist as an alternative, the mission aims to collect as many toys as possible.

The final Christmas mission is the ‘Sponsor a turkey’ mission. Charles Thompsons will use the money donated to provide families in need with a Christmas turkey for their dinner table.

Another event they have on takes place this Friday, November 26). The Charles Thompson’s Mission Sleep Out aims to raise awareness around what rough sleepers go through each night.

Guests of the event will swap their bed for a sleeping bag for one night.

5. Liverpool Homeless Football Club

LHFC is another Liverpool-based charity focused on helping the homeless in the local area.

Working with long-time partner John Bishop, they have started a Christmas Toy Appeal this festive season.

CEO, John Finnigan, told Merseynewslive: “Our staff are cooking and serving a full sit down Christmas dinner for 100 people.”

The charity was started in 2007 and since then they have dedicated their time and efforts to providing Merseyside men and women free access to sports activities.

From this they aim to rebuild the lives of those struggling the most, providing them with a network of support and care.

John also said: “We use football as a means of engagement and then encourage members to have regular health checks, signpost to other agencies and offer them individual support.”

All donations to their Christmas Toy Appeal will be given to children living in hostels and domestic abuse units.

“When they become involved with LHFC they become part of a family and they feel respected and valued.” – John Finnigan

They want to give children in need presents to unwrap on Christmas day.

John also told MNL: “Everyone who comes through our door is on their own journey, each with their own story to tell.”

LHFC have an Amazon wish-list available here, from which they will hand deliver the gifts to every child in need.
