Liverpool council is increasing their amount of staff in order to combat poor conditions in private renting housing sector.

The aim is to ensure the 46,000 rented homes that are a part of Liverpool’s Landlord Licensing scheme meet minimum safety standards.

Council Leader, Cllr Liam Robinson, said: “Landlords with properties in designated areas have a legal duty to sign up for the scheme.

“We now have 5,000 more properties than anticipated – which shows the size and scale of the sector in Liverpool and why we need to dedicate appropriate resources to the issue”.

Funding for the expanded team additional income raised from the scheme and from the government to support the implementation of the Renters Rights Act.

Cabinet Member for Housing, Cllr Hetty Wood, said: “The Renters Rights Act which becomes law later this year is a once in a generation change to the private rented sector and will fundamentally improve security, quality, and fairness for renters”.
