Merseyrail passengers will be able to use their smartphones and bank cards to instantly pay for travel under a new scheme announced today.

Merseytravel said that the expansion of its tap and go scheme will help create “A modern, 21st century transport system that’s faster, cheaper, easier and better connected.”

This has been a long term goal of Metro Mayor Steve Rotheram and the Liverpool City Region, which has invested £10million to create the system.

The change means passengers can use the same contactless card or mobile device at the start and end of their journeys, which it’s hoped will make travel on the network more convenient.

Metro Mayor Steve Rotheram said: This is a long overdue step forward in bringing our transport network up to the standard people rightly expect in 2026.”

He continued: “With contactless payments, we’re making it easier than ever for people to move around our region, without worrying about rush-hour queues or calculating the best possible fare.”

Merseyrail has also confirmed that it has frozen its fares until March 2027, in line with national policy.

This development will also support the Mayor’s ambition for the region to be net zero by 2035.
