The view facing many website users today

Parts of the web are experiencing technical problems as infrastructure service Cloudflare, which is used to establish secure connections, has crashed.

Visitors to X, ChatGPT and various other websites experienced issues today during another internet outage.

To establish a secure connection online there is three steps: the browsers must be working, Cloudflare must be working, and the website host must be working.

In simple terms it is the postman, delivering the service.

Users type in a website, Cloudflare provides safe, fast, and reliable service to access the website.

Ironically the website used to monitor site disruptions Downdetector has crashed, due to its reliance on Cloudflare.

Scheduled maintenance was pencilled in for today and as of 1pm the issue had been identified.

Cloudflare have provided an update stating: “We have made changes that have allowed Cloudflare Access and WARP to recover. Error levels for Access and WARP users have returned to pre-incident rates. We have re-enabled WARP access in London.”

The internet seems simple to use, however the abilities to do so are much more complicated.

Cloudflare provides some of these, and terms like ‘WARP access’ essentially mean safe connection to websites, like VPNs but without the choice of server location.

Less than a month ago Amazon Web Services experienced huge crashes seeing impacts across social media, and websites.

Today’s outage is of a smaller scale, but still of concern highlighting how the tool of internet with endless sites, is reliant on so few systems.
