Liverpool has welcomed a rare and spectacular visitor: the Galeón Andalucía, a life-sized replica of a 17th century galleon. From 24 September to 5 October 2025, the ship will be moored at Royal Albert Dock, offering locals and visitors alike the opportunity to explore five decks of maritime history, craftsmanship, and seafaring adventure.

The ship has travelled extensively, visiting major ports worldwide, serving as a “floating museum” where history comes alive through interactive exhibits, crew in period costume, navigation tools, and stories of exploration, trade, and global maritime routes.

The ship is more than a museum; it is a symbol of centuries of global exploration, trade, and cultural exchange. It closely emulates the galleons that used to travel between Spain, the Americas, Asia and other ports during the Spanish Empire era.

Its structure is built of wood (oak, pine) with aspects of modern materials (fibreglass elements) and up-to-date safety features. It includes multiple masts and the full sail rigging typical of its historical counterparts.

The Galeón Andalucía is a rare opportunity to step back into an age of sail and history – to walk the planks (literally), to see how navigation tools were used, to imagine life at sea centuries ago.

It’s a chance to picture Liverpool’s own seafaring past through a very difficult lens, another reminder of how the port has always been shaped by arrivals from overseas.
