Andy Burnham, the mayor of Greater Manchester, has attracted headlines from the Labour Party conference regarding the potential for a leadership race.

Sky News released a poll today about who would win if there were to be a leadership contest, with the results showing that almost 2 out of 3 Labour members would vote for Burnham.

Mersey News Live correspondents spoke to delegates attending the conference today to get their point of view.

John Dawson, who was attending the conference, said: “I don’t think it’s a likely scenario for that to actually take place, the Labour Party have had a lot of division over the years, and I don’t believe Andy Burnham would have enough support to put up a leadership challenge.”

Dawsons words echo what Burnham himself had said in playing down the prospect of a leadership bid. He told the Guardian: “I can’t launch a leadership campaign, I’m not in parliament.”

Mr Dawson also said: “I think it’s a bit premature to have a leadership race for Labour as they are more focused on reform and Nigel Farage, I think if it was three years down the line and there wasn’t any delivery from Keir then it would be more of a likely scenario.”

Another attendee of the conference, Robert May, said: “I think that the comments that Burnham made were fine and have been blown out of proportion by the media, I don’t think his interest is to challenge for leadership but to just support and get the best out of the conference for the Labour Party.”
