Legendary scare-fest Farmaggedon opened its doors at the weekend to test-run all the actors in their full makeup and prosthetics.

The event’s purpose is to scare visitors and leave them suitably shaken after gingerly stepping into the four scare houses they offer.

John Earley, 43, is one of few male makeup artists in Farmaggedon and is pushing against the stereotype that a straight male can’t be successful in makeup.

John said: “I have had companies such as Warner Brothers viewing my work and I did the makeup for an upcoming band called ‘The K’s’, as they wanted to look beat up, which was an amazing opportunity and something to be apart of.”

Farmaggedon has pushed through gender norms and opened opportunities for all their staff members showing the career possibilities for special effects makeup.

John said: “I’m surrounded by people that are just on my wavelength and it helps that I love what I do.”

This opens paths for people thinking about pursuing makeup, as it doesn’t have to be the stereotypical makeup styles.

They can include prosthetics for films, events or theatres. John’s message is that there is a whole world that revolves around makeup and prosthetics and it is not the narrowed career which some people may think it is.
