Sunday Night saw the Oscars’ 2024 Academy Awards return to our screens for their 96th Anniversary.

Hosted for a second year by Jimmy Kimmel, film fans took to their seats to find out the big winners for 2024.

“Oppenheimer” was the favourite to win this year, with 13 nominations and seven awards. Fans were not surprised the film took home the must-have awards, including Best Actor, Best Director, and Best Picture.

In close second, “Barbie” earned itself eight nominations, but secured just one win for Best Song – “What Was I Made For?” performed earlier in the evening by Billie Eilish and Finneas O’Connell.

The song beat out the infamous “I’m Just Ken”, comically performed by Ryan Gosling and fellow ‘Kens’ from the Barbie movie. The stage was lit with pink contrasts and screened lyrics for the celeb-audience to sing along.

Another big winner of the night was “Poor Things”, winning Best Makeup and Hairstyling, Production Design, Costume Design, and of course, Emma Stone’s win for Best Actress.

With seven nominations, “Maestro” sadly missed out on an award this year. Despite Cooper’s dedicated performance, drawing on his experience as a conductor, he missed out on the award to Cillian Murphy for “Oppenheimer”.

There were some surprises throughout the evening, the most shocking being John Cena’s ‘streaker’ moment in a hilarious homage to the unexpected nude stage-runner in the 46th Oscar’s ceremony. This clever presentation for the Best Costume Design award certainly did not go amiss.

The Academy also announced a new category for film-fanatics to watch out for in coming years – an Achievement in Casting. The awards have increasingly celebrated diverse and inclusive categories and nominations over the years, with three foreign language films being up for Oscars this year. Lily Gladstone also became the first native-American to be nominated for Best Actress for Killers of the Flower Moon.
