A 58 year-old from Newton-Le-Willows has completed a ‘ten tricks on a skateboard’ challenge and raised over £1,200 for Parkinson’s UK.

Philip Brown was diagnosed with Parkinson’s in 2018, and began skateboarding in 2022 after helping his son learn.

He said: “When I’m cruising, I feel free from everything, all my troubles. I don’t notice the tremors so much.”

Parkinson’s disease is neurological, damaging the brain progressively over the years.

Symptoms include involuntary tremors, slow movement and stiff muscles. The disease can also cause a range of mental and physical symptoms like memory loss, balance problems and loss of smell.

Mr Brown said his symptoms made the challenge extremely difficult, and that “everyday is difficult, not just challenges like that.”

His initial fundraising goal was £500, which he massively surpassed thanks to donations from the public.

“UK charity Parkinson’s UK provide support for people with the disease, as well as campaigning for better healthcare and funding research for new treatments.

Mr Brown said: “I wanted to give something back because they’ve done a lot for me.”
