A leading journalist will discuss free speech on campus this Friday as part of an LJMU student union event in partnership with Index on Censorship.
Martin Bright, a former Observer journalist who was portrayed by Matt Smith in the film Official Secrets, will take part in the event, which is titled: Have Gen-Z been silenced on campus and off?
Free expression on campus has become a high profile and controversial issue in recent years. Yesterday, the University of Sussex began an appeal against a £585,000 fine imposed by the Office for Students for failing to uphold freedom of speech.
Index on Censorship is a leading magazine and website specialising in reporting on freedom of expression and human rights issues. LJMU’s journalism department has a longstanding relationship with Index, and every year one of its graduating students is awarded a year-long internship working with its editorial team.
This year’s intern, Connor O’Brien, will also join Friday’s discussion, after which there will be refreshments and a Q&A. The event will take place in the Student Life Building from 5.30-7.30pm.
