Every January, people flock to gyms as a result of their New Year’s resolutions.
Research from UK Active shows that some gyms can be up to 40% busier in January than the two previous months, as Christmas indulgence gives way to new year health kick.
Despite the influx of business, it can be difficult for gyms to maintain their new members, who often quit due to a lack of time, confidence or money.
Elaine Stapleton, owner of Bungee Fly Fitness in Liverpool said: “In the new year, it’s crazy. The rush is the first two weeks in December, then it goes off. Most of January is just crazy because people have spent two weeks eating a lot and drinking a lot.”

One of the main reasons people give up so early into their fitness journey is the cost.
According to YouGov, 8% of Brits said they were forced to cut back on gym memberships in recent years due to the cost of living.
“The gym can be expensive if you’re not committed. It’s no good paying £40-£50 per month for a gym if you’re not going to do it. I would say try,” said Elaine.
She added: “Do a free one first, then if you like it, sign up. But first you have to make the commitment to do it.”
Bungee workouts are a unique way of getting fit. They’re described as a dynamic and full-body workout that builds muscle, improves posture and promotes weight loss. But most of all, according to gym-goers, they’re fun.
“It can be intimidating but I try and make it not. It’s a very hard workout but it’s fun. As long as people come with an open mind and they want to have fun, they’ll get a lot out of it,” said Elaine.

Elaine has purposely organised her gym in a way to maximise enjoyment. By not having mirrors in the room, she believes people can make the most of their experience.
Other fitness spaces also opt to go without mirrors, believing that it’s best to not have people focus on their insecurities. Also, no mirrors may improve concentration.
“I purposely don’t have any mirrors in here because I don’t want people to see themselves. Nobody looks great in this kit! All we try and do here is make sure it’s fun as possible. I’m not one for making everything regimented,” she said.
Finding the right workout can be one of the hardest parts of making sure a routine sticks.
Elaine said: “Try different workouts. If you go to the gym and want to be part of a group, great. But try two or three different things.”
