Bidston tip on Wallasey Bridge road was evacuated this morning following reports that a ‘mortar bomb’ had been found.

A spokesperson for Veolia said: “We can confirm that our Bidston Integrated Waste Management Facility on Wallasey Bridge Road, Birkenhead was evacuated this morning (Monday 5 January) as a precautionary measure after a suspicious item was discovered on the sorting line at the Materials Recovery Facility at approximately 9:00am. Our staff acted quickly in line with our established safety procedures and contacted the relevant emergency services.”
The tip is closed for the day. The Veolia spokesperson said:
“Bidston Household Waste Recycling Centre is currently closed to members of the public and we apologise for any inconvenience caused. The safety of our customers, staff, and the wider community is our absolute priority.”
The bomb squad have been called to the location and some workers have stayed on site.
Unexploded mortar bombs are surprisingly common in the UK, they were dropped during the Second World War and are often found during construction.
As an alternative to Bidston tip Veolia have said:
“Residents are encouraged to visit the Clatterbridge Household Waste Recycling Centre, Mount Road, or West Kirby Household Waste Recycling Centre, Greenback Road. For the latest updates to find out when the site is reopened.”
