Merseyside foodbanks are set to face a difficult winter due to consistently high demand.
Due to the ongoing cost-of-living crisis, foodbanks are more in need across the country with people struggling with higher expenses at this time of year.
Charlotte Moorcroft, the Development Lead at St Andrew’s Community Network, which is based in Clubmoor, Liverpool, said: “Winter always brings a fresh set of challenges for those already facing poverty and hardship, as energy bills rise and Christmas can push already stretched budgets towards breaking point.”
Trussell reported an increase of 38% in distribution of food parcels by them in the North West region in the past five years, reflecting the increase in need for, and the awareness of, foodbanks.
Matthew Van Duyvenbode, co-chief executive at Trussell, said: “With a food parcel being given out every 10 seconds this winter, we know far too many people will be facing hunger and hardship during the festive season.
“Foodbanks are a lifeline, offering a warm welcome and a listening ear.”
South Liverpool Foodbank update their page with what items are most needed. This currently includes: instant coffee, long-life juice, noodles, shampoo, shower gel and other tinned foods.
There are over 70 Emergency Food Providers in Liverpool at the moment.
FareShare Chief Executive, Kris Gibbon-Walsh, said: “Food from FareShare reaches a network of over 8,000 charities across the UK, enabling them to provide food support alongside access to other vital services.
“In the winter months, many people accessing these local groups are forced to choose between keeping warm and eating.”
