A 22-year-old from Cheltenham who vowed to complete a marathon for every year of 2025 finished his 49th run this week at Liverpool’s Lime Street station.

Tommy Greenhouse, who this summer graduated from a degree in sport rehabilitation, has taken on the year-long challenge to raise money for 52 different mental health charities.

He ran loops around Anfield stadium this week to raise money for PTSD UK, a charity which raises awareness on the causes, symptoms, and treatments available for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. It is the only UK charity for everyone affected by the condition.

By the end of the year, he will have run across all 48 English counties as well as completing four additional marathons outside of England, in Cardiff, Istanbul, Giza and Dubai. Along the way he is telling the story of his struggles, spreading the message that life can get better.

Tommy said: “I used to suffer really badly. I’ve tried to take my own life several times and when it came to choosing different mental health charities, PTSD was massive for me because, although it wasn’t confirmed, I used to experience quite bad flashbacks of some of my attempts, so I empathise so badly with the condition.”

He added: “Even though, I still get my down days, I still get low sometimes, I still relapse, but we are all still capable of amazing things even if you are not mentally there at the moment. It will come, you’ve just got to keep on going, and when it does come, it will feel so sweet.”

Tommy said he hopes that completing this challenge will help other people who are currently struggling to find their purpose and feel confident to talk about their problems.

Finishing his marathon at Lime Street station, Tommy said how good it feels to be nearing the end of his 52-week challenge.

With only three more marathons to go; Cardiff, Greater London and lastly his home town of Cheltenham, the finishing line is now in sight.

Tommy said that the experience had been hard, but that he is determined to see it through: “I will keep going and I can finish it.”
