Young children will receive free books from libraries across the city throughout the Christmas period.
The Liverpool City Council scheme means any child under the age of five who joins a library between December 1st, and Christmas Eve 2025 will receive a free book bag which contains a specially chosen book.
The scheme was set up in response to the Government naming 2026 as the National Year of Reading.
It is the beginning of a number of schemes that will be ran across the Liverpool Libraries in the new year in celebration.
Jess Dyson-Houghton, the Library Operations Manager, said: “We are really keen to support all of our readers, especially our young readers, and we think this is a really lovely thing to do to celebrate our young readers at Christmas time and make sure that everyone walks away with a free book.”
She added: “This is a way for us to get a bit of an early start in supporting that national year and to ensure that children have access to books and an early age, which I think is deeply important for young literacy.”
The scheme comes as part of a wider programme of festive events aimed at supporting children and families throughout December.
Jess said: “It’s really about making sure people are aware that there might actually be a library just around the corner from them, which has events on and different activities that can really support them.
“We love to see more people coming into our libraries.”
She added: “I’ve had a few bits of feedback from my library managers from across branches and it’s lovely to hear stories of books being handed out, because that is the big win for us that children are walking away with the book for free.”
