Your Party, the new left-wing party founded by former Labour MPs Jeremy Corbyn and Zarah Sultana, staged its founding conference in Liverpool this weekend amid in-fighting and recrimination.

The event, which took place at ACC Liverpool, was supposed to provide a launch pad for the new party. Mr Corbyn, who led Labour between 2015 and 2020, told Mersey News Live that votes on its constitution represented “democracy in action”.

Delegates voted to keep the name Your Party but other elements of the conference featured angry disagreements.

Problems arose on Saturday morning when delegates who are also members of the Socialist Workers Party were expelled from the conference. James Giles, aid to Zarah Sultana, was one of those to be barred. This caused the Coventry South MP to boycott the first day.

A Your Party spokesperson said that members were told on joining that dual membership would lead to expulsion.

Members voted for a collective membership by 51%. This removes Jeremy Corbyn and Zarah Sultana as co-leaders. They will be replaced by a member-led executive.

Members also voted for dual party membership however the executive will release a list of which parties are allowed in this.
