Christmas festivities are getting underway across the North West. Panto, light trails and of course the markets.

The photo shows an outdoor Christmas market set against a large, ornate stone building with many pointed towers and decorative spires. The sky above is grey and overcast, giving everything a wintry feel.In the foreground, there are two wooden market stalls. On the left is a round stall with a sign that reads “Swing Grill German Sausage.” Warm yellow lights are strung around its roof, giving it a cozy glow. A few people are standing nearby, bundled up in coats. To the right is a larger wooden cabin-style stall with a sign that says “Lodge.” Above its roof hangs a big banner reading “Welcome to Liverpool Christmas Markets” in red and blue lettering. A life-size Santa figure is mounted just under the sign. There are small Christmas decorations along the roofline, and a tiny Christmas tree sits outside the stall. A handful of people are walking around the market area, wearing winter jackets. Some plastic bins and coverings are visible around the stalls, suggesting setup or storage. The scene feels festive despite the grey weather, with warm lights contrasting the cloudy sky.

Liverpool’s well-known Christmas Market has made its return to St George’s Plateau, offering the familiar blend of twinkling lights, craft stalls, fairground rides and many different foods. This year, the city’s festive stalls have been named as one of the best in the country by ‘Which?’.

Although the market’s popularity is undeniable, with people still travelling to visit, for some the prices may be too much. A classic mulled wine on some of the stalls is £6.50 while a Bratwurst is £9.

For those pursuing a more low-key, budget-friendly festive outing, a group in Warrington is offering a heart-warming community market as an alternative. The event, which is being held in Woolston, is looking to be more modest but equally charming with stalls that consist of local and small businesses, a Santa’s Grotto and fairground rides- ideal for families looking to save a little money without sacrificing the festive atmosphere.

Kate Chu, one of the organisers from KCArtisan, said: “The community in Woolston have asked for it, because they don’t want to be trekking to Manchester and Liverpool to go to the Christmas markets.

“They don’t want to spend a fortune, they want somewhere more family friendly, for the children to enjoy, so I think it will be a really positive thing for the community.” The ‘Warrington Christmas Extravaganza’ is on at Monks, Sunday 7th December, 11am to 7pm.
