A Merseyside charity that helps people with sight loss is launching fundraising drive to boost its work this Christmas.

Bradbury Fields will have teams of volunteers taking part in Liverpool’s iconic Santa Dash and the Wirral Walk in the coming weeks to raise money, as well as organising its own Christmas raffle.

As well as much-needed funds, the hope is that these events will raise awareness of the work of Bradbury Fields, which supports those who are blind, partially sighted and people with dual sensory impairments to ensure they can contribute to the social and economic fabric of their local communities. Opportunities are offered such as exercise, music and social events.

They hosted a night of blind dining on the 29th of October at Boxpark at the Baltic Market, were they allowed the guests to eat a three-course meal blindfolded.

Louise Miller, the Community Fundraising Co-ordinator who is legally blind herself, told Mersey News Live about why raising awareness for sight loss is so important: “Visually impaired people, what they tend to do is mask that they have sight loss, and I mentioned to someone before, if I don’t have my cane out, no body would know that I have sight loss.”

She added: “A lot of people may know many visually impaired people or see visually impaired people around, but because visually impaired people have developed these coping mechanisms and skills, they don’t necessarily realise what barriers that person is facing or the challenges that come with sight loss, so having events like this raise awareness and create a much nicer community for us all to understand.”

Bradbury Fields was founded in 1857 and since has continued to support the two million people in the UK suffering from sight loss. Through funding from the government and public support, it is what they need to support those who need it.
