The classic tale of Dick Whittington is heading to the stage at St Helen’s Theatre Royal, directed by Chantelle Joseph, who was recently shortlisted for ‘best director’ at the National Pantomime Awards.

The production will commence on Friday 28th November 2025 and will run until Sunday 11th January 2026, promising festive fun for the entire family.

Emmerdale star Matthew Wolfenden will take the lead role as Dick Whittington in his St Helens debut. He will be joined by local legend Lewis Devine as Idle Jack, Timothy Lucas who will play the villainous King Rat, and Chantelle Morgan in the role of Alice Fitzwarren, amongst others.

Lewis said: “I love interacting with the kids and families. Sometimes it can be hard to keep a straight face when things go wrong- which they will. Also, staying in character when someone in the audience shouts something hilarious can be a proper challenge.”

The show follows the classic rags-to-riches story of Dick Whittington as he sets off to London to seek fame and fortune. Along the way, he faces the wicked King Rat and soon discovers that the streets aren’t quite paved with gold after all.

Audiences can expect dazzling costumes, spectacular sets, West End- style 3D effects and interactive fun for the whole family.

Chantelle, who has promised to bring her trademark creativity and flair to this festive favourite, said: “I am so delighted to be able to present such a brilliant cast packed with St Helens’ favourites.”

She added: “I know St Helens audiences are going to absolutely love what we have in store for them this season.”

Packed with local talent, show- stopping performances and festive fun, Dick Whittington is set to be St Helens Theatre Royal’s biggest and most enchanting Christmas show yet.
