Merseyside Police have made a fresh appeal for information 20 years after Anthony Cavanagh was tragically killed in an unprovoked attack while leaving a bar on Fleet Street opposite Concert Square.

The then 21-year-old was leaving what was ‘Walkabout’ bar with some friends where he was punched in the head, hitting the floor and sustaining irreversible head injuries. He died in hospital 11 days later (on October 5th) – the day after his 22nd birthday.
The person that punched Anthony has never been brought to justice and 20 years on police and Anthony’s’ family are continuing to appeal for information.
Howard Rubbery, Head of the Serious Crime Review Unit, said: “Although 20 years has passed, Anthony’s family will not be able to rest until those responsible for his death are brought before the court.”
“There are people that know the person responsible for his death. If you have information that can help with the investigation, then we urge you to search your conscience and get in contact.”
Anthony, known as Tony to his mum, was on weekend leave from the Royal Navy and travelled from Portsmouth to his home in Kirkdale to see his friends and family. Whilst inside Walkabout he accidentally bumped into a group of men inside and apologised after a drink was spilled. When leaving they were met with the group of men including the one he bumped into. After the punch was thrown this group of men fled the scene.
“Anyone who has information, no matter how small, can help us make significant progress in the investigation.
“We know how difficult it can be for people to speak up and pass on what they know, which is why they can contact Crimestoppers anonymously and any information will be treated with sensitivity and care.” (Howard Rubbery)
