Liverpool has made history after being named the world’s first “accelerator city”.
The ‘Accelerator City’ initiative has been launched for cities fighting for climate action at a faster-than-normal pace.
The honour was bestowed on the city by the United Nations Entertainment and Culture for Climate Action (ECCA) programme.
In Liverpool’s case, they have set ambitious targets to make the TV/film and live music sector carbon neutral, ahead of any other city globally.
Prof Jason Kirby, director of Biological and Environmental Sciences at Liverpool John Moores University, said: “Liverpool is synonymous with culture, the arts and particularly music.
“It’s a great opportunity to use reputation and legacy as a means to lead with action on climate change.”
Liverpool John Moores University have played a major role in contributing to Liverpool’s plan to be carbon zero by 2035.
Prof Kirby added: “The university issued a climate emergency declaration in February 2020 and shortly after that we convened a steering group of staff that we called the climate action panel.
“We think every single person has a moral obligation and a capacity to make contributions to saving the planet.”
In honour of the new programme, Liverpool has announced several key events and policies, including a three night live music festival from November 28-30 which will be held at the Liverpool M&S Bank Arena.
Alongside this, they have introduced a ‘green ticket to ride’ to promote public transport to get to concerts and live shows in order to reduce traffic on the roads.
