George Harrison’s childhood home is opening in January for guided tours for the first time.

It is thanks to Dale Roberts, a tour guide, co-owner of the property and Beatles enthusiast who has dedicated over a decade to sharing the band’s history to visitors across the globe.

The childhood home is located at 25 Upton Green in Speke, where the former Beatle lived from 1949 until 1962 and was a rehearsal spot for The Quarrymen, as the four were originally known.

The house was purchased at an auction in 2022 by Ken Lambert, who then asked Roberts to come on board as a co-owner last December.

The house was then turned into an Airbnb, allowing guests to stay where The Beatles history was made.

Roberts said: “George Harrison’s childhood home has been an Airbnb for about three and a half years, but in January, that’s when we are starting to do tours of the house itself.

“This means that for the first time, three out of the four of The Beatles have now got their own childhood homes available for tours.”

The Beatles Magical Mystery Tour offers tourists a guided tour by bus around the most important Beatles locations in Liverpool, including the Fab Four’s childhood homes.

From January, you can get a glance inside George Harrison’s historical home.

Holly Tessler, a Senior Lecturer at University of Liverpool who teaches an MA in The Beatles, Heritage and Culture, said: “There are always challenges to operating a tourism site within a residential area.

“But as long as these issues are considered and sensitively addressed, I think a guided tour through George Harrison’s home will be a positive way of attracting Beatles fans to different areas of Liverpool beyond the city centre.”

The new one-and-a-half-hour guided tour will be delivered in small groups, offering a brand-new intimate and informal exploration into George’s and The Beatles’ formative years.

Tourists and visitors will be able to access all rooms, learn about the role of Speke and South Liverpool in the roots of The Beatles, play instruments that are inside the house and take photos and videos throughout the property.

George Harrison’s home only received a blue plaque in 2021 and it now joins Paul McCartney’s and John Lennon’s childhood homes as an established historical fixture.
