An underground pipeline system planned for Wirral that will capture 200 million tonnes of carbon waste from industry has been backed by Metro Mayor Steve Rotheram.
Mr Rotheram said: “We have to do something to stop the level of emissions and to became net zero.”
Some residents have raised concerns about potential environmental leakage and pollution from the pipes that will be pumped out to Morcombe Bay field.
After Mr Rotheram made his comments on a BBC Radio Merseyside phone-in, caller Mark Fleming suggested that there is a lot of Wirral residents concerned about the planned infrastructure.
Mr Fleming said that he was “allowing the Wirral to become a waste pipe for industries carbon dioxide across the country”.
Mr Rotheram responded that there are numerous pipes for gas and sewage underground in the Wirral. He said: “I don’t understand the objection specifically to taking carbons out of the atmosphere and storing under the sea in caverns where it won’t do the atmosphere damage.” He added: “What’s the alternative?”
