As we enter a new year Liverpool’s dockland plans are ambitious, yet questions remain as to whether development plans are neglecting areas of the city that were once the beating heart.
St. John’s Market, Lime Street, and Williamson Square stood proud in the past, with the community centring around these spaces.
Plans for the docklands are welcomed, and represent the hopes to transform the city, leaving decades of decline behind. However, while innovative, spaces that were once bustling lay dormant.
The imbalance between regeneration efforts leaves the question of whether new developments should take priority over forgotten areas facing decline.
New projects continue to break ground, but first Liverpool must balance global ambition with local need.
