Concert Square bar Modo has closed.

Modo first launched in 1997 and became a staple for students and tourists on nights out, but the doors were closed after their final New Year’s celebration.

The owners, Baa Bar Ltd, said the venue will reopen, but not as Modo.

Managing director of Baa Bar Ltd, Oliver Clarke said: “It wasn’t a decision we made lightly, we aren’t shut for good, we have just come off of a really great year, it’s been really good to see the students have been back on form, so it’s been busy.

“We just reviewed our business this year, we also own Baa Bar, and we have really made something special, it’s got a clear direction and identity, and we kind of reviewed Modo and kind of thought what is Modo now.”

Concert Square is home to a varied selection of bars and clubs, all often competing with one another on busy weekends.

Clarke said details of the new venue cannot be revealed just yet, but added how exciting and experiential it will be.

He said: “It won’t just be pouring pints and that, it’s to bring a bit of theatre to everyone, you really have to fight for the customers nowadays so we will be giving them a reason to choose us over anyone else.”

New plans are yet to be released, but the impact of the long-standing Modo won’t be forgotten.

Clarke said: “Some people are quite sad, some have been coming for 30 years, they’ve met their wives at Modo, they’ve met their husbands!”
