Schoolchildren’s artwork is on display at Liverpool Cathedral as part of its annual Christmas exhibition.

This year’s The Light Before Christmas, now in it’s fourth year, is called The Gift and will run until December 6.

The light and sound experience features work from pupils from more than 30 different Merseyside schools.

Alissa Koopal, Director of Enterprise at Liverpool Cathedral, said they wanted to do something special and involve more people in the project.

She said: “We wanted to work with children to recreate their interpretation of ‘The Gift’ and Christmas.”

“Some of the works you see in the corridor, as you walk in before the show are absolutely brilliant and it’s very humbling to see,” she added.

Koopal said it was incredible to see what the children thought of Christmas and The Gift, and also what they made.

She said having the artwork from schools brings the experience closer to home.

The Light Before Christmas has become an annual tradition for some in Liverpool, where visitors are welcomed by festive-themed projections, soundscapes and images.

Koopal, said: “For us it’s one of those moments where we can bring everyone together, we can show we do things a little bit different, we are Liverpool after all.

“It’s just a lovely opportunity for people to explore the building and have an immersive experience.”

The Gift is in collaboration with Luxmuralis, world renowned artists who create art installations across the UK.

Koopal said: “The team is really passionate about making this happen every year.”

Over the nine nights, 30,000 tickets have been made available, with last year’s experience attracted over 27,000 people.
