Why spend so much money on a Halloween costume that you’re never going to wear again? Instead, you can just re-use the clothes you already have and make it just as fabulous.

The average person spends £31.30 on an outfit for Halloween every year, according to costume retailer partyworldwide.net, which makes the month of October a very expensive one. With the cost-of-living rising is it worth spending so much money on one outfit which could be spent on a food shop?

Alicia Heartley, 21, a former costume designer for Can Can Productions in Halifax, said: “I think it is easy enough for anyone to make their own Halloween costume because it’s just re-using the things you already have.

“When I was working for ‘Can Can Production’ I was bringing in pieces of my own because it was low funded, and that made it more suitable for the actor’s costume I was designing.”

With the cost of living going up and fast fashion being so widespread, money is being thrown at these companies which doesn’t leave much in people’s pockets for the rest of October.

So here are some ideas for cheap and sustainable Halloween Costumes:

  1. A black cat – paired with a basic black top and skirt and draw whiskers on your face with makeup.
  2. A clown – you’ll need make-up to create the look with a bright coloured shirt and some formal trousers.
  3. Little Red Riding Hood – paired with a red scarf, white dress or top and skirt. black belt and tights.
  4. Scarecrow – a pair of dungarees, orange or brown check pattern shirt underneath with a hat.
  5. Kim Possible- Paired with a black top and green trousers and accessorize how you like.
  6. Skellington – Black outfit with face paint to make the skeleton.
  7. Angel & Devil – black and red outfit with face paint to fit the aesthetic.
