Train passengers across Liverpool and the wider region are facing disruptions today as rail operators introduce measures to cope with the hot temperatures.

Merseyrail has warned customers to check before travelling after Network Rail imposed speed restrictions on parts of the network due to the risk of heat-related damage to railway tracks.

The restrictions are designed to reduce the chance of electrical equipment overheating during the current hot spell Merseyside is facing.

Passengers have experienced cancellations and delays throughout the day, with Merseyrail advising people to use journey planners and live departure boards before fixing plans.

Merseyrail said: “Passengers are being urged to prepare for delays as temperatures continue to rise across the region.”

The disruption comes as the Met Office issued amber and red weather warnings across England amid an intense heatwave.

Liverpool is set to see record breaking temperatures this week, as Thursday, June 25 is predicted to be 37C.

National Rail has warned that hot weather is expected to affect services across several operators this week, with disruption likely to continue while temperatures remain elevated.

Despite the challenges, rail services are continuing to operate across most of the Merseyrail network, with transport officials stressing that the temporary restrictions are necessary to ensure passenger safety during the heatwave.
