Flamboyant, colourful, risqué. St. Helen’s Theatre Royal kicked off the Easter holidays with their adaptation of “Cinderella”.
Typical attributes of the classic tale were combined with the beloved features of pantomime, entertaining children and adults alike. With a script that pushed the much-loved classic into risqué territory at times, this was a pantomime for almost all the family.
The theatre promised to return the popular show filled with more laughter, sparkle and chaos and it delivered just that. The performance followed the original storyline of “Cinderella”, with characters such as the ugly stepsisters, “Ozempic” and “Mounjaro” (Richard Aucott and Shania Pain) providing quick-witted commentary and reaction throughout.
Fortunately much of the script would go over the heads of younger audience members, with one mother turning to her older son with a look of horror as he laughed at Lewis Devine as ‘Buttons’ using the microphone to reference a sex toy. Although hilarious, parents of older children be warned!

Devine was most certainly a fan favourite and a key player in audience interaction. His timing and delivery, often veering from the script was well received with audience members of all ages.
Musical performances from Rachael Wood, as the Fairy Godmother caused the rambunctious crowd to fall silent for a moment of sheer vocal talent, with the songs performed consisting of classics, both new and old. A soundtrack peppered with songs that have been recent hits on TikTok allowed the younger crowd to sing along; as the ugly sisters contemplated finding a rich suitor at the ball, with Megan Boni’s viral earworm “Man in Finance” being the soundtrack of choice.
Dynamix performing arts college dancers filled the stage with colourful choreography with dance captain, Owen Doolan being one to watch in future performances. Producer, Chantelle Joseph and the team have truly brought some sparkle to the Easter holidays with this modern twist to a classic tale.

With “Cinderella” showing at St Helen’s Theatre Royal until April 21, this performance is not to be missed. From grandparents to grandchildren and everyone in between, this well-written, flamboyant spin on the beloved tale ensures an evening of laughter for the whole family this Easter.
