Campaigners for the African Caribbean Centre in Toxteth will gather outside Liverpool’s town hall today ahead of a cabinet meeting to determine the future of the centre.

The meeting will take place at 5PM this evening (Weds), as plans by the council to build a single-faith all girls school on the site reach crunch time.

The cabinet will hear representatives of the centre voice their opposition to the proposed development and will scrutinise changes to the plans made during the last meeting on 25th February. Campaigners were heard both in and outside the town hall throughout.

The community centre, situated on Mulgrave street, was established in 1987 following the Toxteth riots.

Cabinet member for growth and economy Cllr. Nick Small said plans for the school had been agreed in 2023. He added: “We want to work with everybody to deliver a new school and new and better facilities for the Caribbean Centre”.

A statement from the centre said they had been “broadsided” after a lack of council consultation.

An online petition against plans to build the new school has reached over 5,000 signatures since it was posted in late February.

A social media post by a representative of the centre has encouraged supporters to join the gathering and “make [their] presence felt”.
