Liverpool’s St. John’s Beacon will tonight be illuminated with messages encouraging smokers to quit, in a move praised by public health charity Action on Smoking and Health.
Deputy Chief Executive of Action on Smoking and Health, Caroline Cerny said: “It’s fantastic to see Liverpool taking eye-catching action to encourage people to take action to improve their health.”
Later today, messages promoting the dangers of addiction will appear on the landmark building, emerging from an animation displaying a cigarette gradually burning away. The council says this symbolises the journey to a smoke free life.
The display is part of a nationwide ‘no-smoking day’ taking place today (Wednesday March 14th).
Ms. Cerny continued: “Regardless of age or how long someone has smoked, quitting can significantly improve health and overall well-being.”
In Liverpool, smoking remains a leading cause of preventable illness. According to Liverpool Council, two in three smokers will lose their lives to a smoking-related illness.
Cabinet Member for Culture and Health, Cllr. Harry Doyle said: “Quitting smoking is one of the best decisions you can make for your health, and No Smoking Day is the perfect opportunity to take that first step.”.
