As bookshops all over the UK become increasingly scarce, one bookshop in Liverpool remains a staple of Bold Street.

News From Nowhere is a radical community bookshop that’s served Liverpool since 1974, attracting people from far and wide to shop for books that you won’t find in just any shop.

Maria N’g of News From Nowhere said: “We tend to cover issues that more mainstream/bigger bookshops might not cover in the same range of breadth as we would.

“We have more representation of smaller publishers and more so nowadays, more self-published or independent publishers”

Liverpool’s reading age still stands below the national average for children and getting young people interested in books is just as vital now as it was in 1974.

All kinds of reading is good

Maria added: “It’s massively important! Reading is our way into understanding the world, understanding each other, understanding history, everything!

“Getting people into the habit and the love of reading at a young age, any kind of reading! It doesn’t need to be massive literary or academic. All kinds of reading is good!”

With the rise of technology, bookshops are becoming more and more rare. News From Nowhere is still a thriving part of Liverpool’s highstreet however.

Maria said: “What we’ve found is people might have an E-reader, but they will still have books.

“It’s not that people have just dropped physical books, people who love reading will read in all-formats. It’s probably like the revival of vinyl and so on, people value physical objects.”
