Liverpool City Council is urging drivers to take extra precautions as winter weather affects road conditions, significantly increasing the risk of road traffic collisions.
According to the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA), 21 people were killed whilst 382 were seriously injured in reported road traffic collisions across the UK in 2023.
Liverpool City Council has provided guidelines for drivers across the city to follow on the harsh roads this winter.
With yellow warnings of snow and ice this January, the council have asked drivers to take into consideration if their journey is necessary and to plan their journeys well.
This can mean checking the weather in advance and adjusting the route in case of dangerous icy roads, as well as ensuring a full tank, fully charged phone and supplies in case of a breakdown or accident on longer journeys.
Before even leaving the driveway, preparing your vehicle was on their list.
This included things like ensuring your vehicle has been properly maintained and serviced, checking that your tyres have sufficient tread depth and the correct pressure for the vehicle.
Additionally they suggested verifying your cooling system contains the correct amount of antifreeze and engine coolant, testing wipers and washers and always carrying a screen scraper and de-icer.
When on the road, the council have urged drivers to drive cautiously by reducing their speed in snowy and icy conditions, driving in the highest possible gear to maintain control, ensuring there is a safe stopping distance between you and other drivers and avoiding harsh breaking and acceleration.
In the case that you do get into an incident or encounter difficulties they advise staying in your vehicle if possible until help arrives and, if you do leave the vehicle, to make yourself known to other drivers.
Additionally, if you breakdown on the motorway, ensure your vehicle is safely out of the way on the hard shoulder or within an emergency refuge space. Exit the vehicle and find appropriate shelter from the elements whilst you wait for assistance.
