Merseyside commuters have welcomed the news from metro mayor Steve Rotheram that the bus fare cap in the region will remain at £2.

This is despite the national cap being raised this month to £3 – a 50% increase.

Mayor Rotheram said the £2 cap will continue until September 2025 so that the people of Merseyside can continue to benefit from affordable travel.

Although, the £2 cap has been beneficial for those across Liverpool, the introduction of the £3 fare in September has caused upset, especially within young people and students.

When asked about the increase, young people in Liverpool made comments such as: “I’ve got to get the bus from Smithdown to town most days for university, so it will definitely affect me in a bad way.”

Another person added: “My loans aren’t too great at the moment; it doesn’t seem like much, but it adds up.”

The £2 cap was introduced in 2022 following the COVID pandemic in order to restore local ridership surrounding buses.

Since the fare cap was introduced, more people than ever have chosen to ride on the bus as it has become the cheapest option of travel across Merseyside. More than 1.6m capped bus fares are purchased every month in Liverpool.
