From surviving a tragic house fire to becoming the highest-ranking Japanese Ju-Jitsu practitioner in the UK, Liverpool legend Sue King has been on a global mission of inspiration.
She has used her story and 40 years of training to triumph over adversity and teach the “importance of resilience and adaptation.”
With four decades of experience, Sue has become a highly respected figure in the martial arts community. She holds a Shihan, a Japanese honorific title for an expert martial arts instructor, a 7th Degree Black Belt, and served as the Regional Officer for Ju-Jitsu in Liverpool.
As the founder and owner of the Muga Mushin Ryu Ju-Jitsu school in Norris Green, she passionately dedicates her life to empowering others and helping them improve their lives through the transformative practice of Ju-Jitsu. By using her personal experiences and teaching key values, Sue’s work has saved countless children from lives of anti-social behaviour and even crime.
Sue said: “The past 12 months have been nothing short of incredible. Our gym has gone from strength to strength, we’re especially proud of how our children’s classes have thrived.”
Her story has touched the hearts of many across the globe. As a child, Sue’s mother died when saving her from a house fire, and she grew up as the sole carer for her seriously ill father – who was in hospital during the fire.
Reflecting on her journey, she said: “If the little kid from Croxteth with literally nothing can triumph over adversity then everyone can.
“While it was a difficult period, it reminded me of my motto of triumph over adversity and the importance of resilience and adaptation, values I strive to share with our students.”
Self-defence was an escape from reality
The house fire injuries caused skin grafts, making Sue a target for childhood bullies. She began self-defence classes in high school, which she described as an escape from reality.
In 2008, her father died, leaving her with funds to open her Ju-Jitsu school and give children a safe space to learn and better themselves.
Last year she begun teaching and giving talks internationally, including in Norway, Belgium, Munich, and Portugal.
She said: “It’s been a great honour to teach throughout the UK and beyond.”
In addition to the international seminars, she will release two books, launch an online course called the Warrior Mindset, continue to grow the Warrior Monk Podcast, and bring more events to her school and community.
She said: “I’m so proud that we’re truly making a difference and changing lives through martial arts. I want to thank everyone for their support and dedication. Together, we’re building something truly special and I’m so excited for what’s to come. Here’s to another amazing year of growth, learning, and community.”
