Anti-social behaviour and burglaries in South Liverpool areas have halved since the Safer Streets initiative launched in 2022.

The campaign was delivered using funding by Merseyside’s Police and Crime Commissioner Emily Spurrell and Liverpool City Council.

The targeted crime reduction programme was set up to improve safety, security and community spirit in Smithdown, Arundel and Edge Hill wards, three areas which had been plaugued by a spike in burglaries and anti-social behaviour in recent years.

Emily Spurrell said: “I’m committed to improving the safety of our communities and that means focussing our efforts in areas where we know local people are facing challenging issues.”

This week Merseyside police delivered safety kits for residents in these areas which included a range of different tools to help prevent and deter burglars.

Some of these tools include a DNA kit to mark their property with as well as vibration window and door alarms.

Additionally an LED tv light simulator was included in the kit to make it seem like somebody’s home to deter burglaries.

The kit also came with a leaflet of further information in how to protect your home.

Police were particularly eager to help students protect their homes and visited student areas offering crime and prevention advice.

Student Smithdown resident Lily Collins said: “It’s a really good thing to bring out, we don’t have to spend loads of money, that students don’t have trying to protect our home and I feel a lot safer knowing the rescources are there.”

Additionally, this year 56 alley gates have been repaired and upgraded and more than 50 streetlights have been installed or improved to help make the area feel safer and be safer.

Councillor Laura Robertson-Collins, Liverpool City Council’s Cabinet Member for Neighbourhoods, said: ‘The Safer Streets programme has made a real impact on a number of anti-social issues affecting some of the communities in this part of South Liverpool.’
