A BBC survey has recently revealed up to 68% of women experience harassment while running.
Behaviour includes cat calling, having items thrown at them from cars or in the worst cases being followed.
MerseyNewsLive spoke to Anna Londono, president of the LJMU running club, about her experiences.
She said: “Every time I go to pick my clothes out the very first thing I think of what’s going to give me the least amount of attention.
“I’d say with every other run I can almost guarantee I get some sort of unwanted attention.”
Anna’s words put in perspective the precautions many women feel they have to take to be able to run in peace.
The survey revealed 82% of women fear experiencing harassment while running, even if they had not experienced it themselves.
This statistic highlights the severity of the issue, as it affects the majority of women runners.
This has led to more women running in groups, either mixed or women’s only, as they are less likely to be “singled out” and can run without problems.
