A union representing outsourced cleaners on Merseyrail has announced that it will suspend proposed strike actions set to take place over Aintree Ladies Day.

The National Union of Rail, Maritime and Transport Workers, known as RMT announced plans to strike on March 19th stating that despite “repeated attempts to negotiate” a deal on pay could not be reached with outsourcing firm Churchill services, “leaving workers no other option but to take strike action”.

However, RMT general secretary Eddie Dempsey announced yesterday that a deal had been reached with Churchill.

Mr Dempsey said: “This is a great victory for some of our lowest paid workers with an improved offer of nearly seven per cent, 20 days of sick pay and improved overtime rates.

“This win could not have been possible without the strong resolve of our members.”

Held every April at Aintree, the Randox Grand National is a highlight of the British sporting calendar.

There are 21 Aintree races in total with the racing commencing at 13:45 on Thursday and Friday and concluding at 17:15, while on Grand National day (Saturday) the racing commences at 13:20 with the final race of the day at 17:35. Ladies Day takes place on Friday.

The world’s most famous steeplechase, broadcast live on ITV, is expected to draw a global television audience of around 600 million, with over 150,000 spectators attending in person across the three-day event.

The feature race of the event, the Randox Grand National, is scheduled for 16:00 on Saturday.
