Liverpool’s free evening parking is set to end within weeks, with charges extending until 11 PM. Currently free after 6 PM, the new rules will see on-street parking fees apply from 7 AM to 11 PM daily.

This comes alongside a general rise in parking fees approved by the council in January, with on-street charges increasing by an average of 60%. A four-hour stay in the city centre will jump from £6 to £9.60.

Sean Edwards, who works at nearby Hardman House, said: “I think this change will be inconvenient for local business. People who work later might not be able to park for free anymore.”

Liverpool City Council first proposed the change in November 2022 to help close a growing budget gap. After delays, a senior official has confirmed the charges will take effect by the end of March.

Lydia Millington, receptionist at Myrtle Street Apartments, said: “I am definitely going to have to rethink how I get into work. I think they should take business exemptions into consideration.”

Sera Holden, LJMU student, said: “I commute into university daily. It’s going to almost double what I spend in parking every week. I would like to see the council work closely with the universities for an alternative or discount.”
