A new exhibition at Lady Lever Art Gallery, Port Sunlight, will showcase the creative abilities of pupils from five secondary schools in Wirral.

The show offers a collection of artworks covering a broad range of subjects across a number of various mediums, and it proudly honours the creativity of young people between the ages of 14 and 18.

Fresh Perspectives runs from February 15, unitl April 27.
The exhibition is taking place for the sixth time. Prenton High School for Girls, South Wirral High School, Upton Hall School FCJ, Weatherhead High School, and West Kirby Grammar School are taking part this year.

Tim Rose, exhibition producer, for the National Museum of Liverpool said 7-8 schools wanted to participate but the gallery had only enough space for 5 each displaying 10-12 artworks.

Teachers chose the artworks based on how the students developed their ideas, the use of the media and the techniques employed.

Year 11 students have been studying self portraits taking inspiration from artists like Gillian Lambert and Mark Powell and then each of them chose their own third artist as a final source of inspiration for their own portrait.

Year 12 students have been studying identity from which they chose their favourite sub-theme.

Initially, 20 student’s artworks were selected for the exhibition, but the number had come down to 10 due to limited space in the gallery.

Susan Lunt, Art lead at South Wirral High School, regarding artistic education, said: “We are ensuring that students study a wide range of artists from different time periods not just the classic old male masters…. exploring a wide range of media and techniques.”

Tia Hodder, one of the artists from South Wirral High School, was very happy about her art being displayed: “I’m very happy…. I wanna be able to go ahead and do this in my career path so to be able to present it makes me very pleased.”
