The Royal Navy’s biggest and newest aircraft received a Freedom of City award in Liverpool.

Almost 800 Royal Navy sailors and marines paraded in the city centre to mark the honour and celebrating it’s close ties with Merseyside, with the ship renaming a passage way after the Beatles’ song “Penny Lane”.

The event began with the Band of HM Royal Marines Scotland leading the sailors through the city’s streets, passing Liverpool Town Hall where Commanding Officer Will Blackett and Lord Mayor Councillor Richard Kemp took the salute.

The ship was presented with an ornate scroll as a symbol of the achievement, which was represented by a casket during the ceremony.
