Recent heavy rainfall has led to flooding in parts of Croxteth Country Park in Liverpool.

The park’s underpass pathways were particularly affected, though the floodwaters have since receded. Visitors are advised to remain cautious, as intermittent rain showers and gusty winds are still expected.

The Park’s social media pages posted messages to visitors saying “please wear appropriate attire, as grounds across the estate are very wet and soggy.”

Flooding has previously been a problem in the park, especially in places with poor drainage. In an effort to improve accessibility and lower the risk of future floods, community projects have been put forth to repair and replace current flood-prone paths.

More than £12,000 was raised to help fund restorations in 2020 however the park still suffers flooding during rainy periods.

Phoebe Parkinson, a frequent visitor of the park and resident in the surrounding area, said: “I come to this park almost every day to walk my dog so I’m not surprised by the flooding, but it is a bit inconvenient as the grass is so water log she can’t even walk on it.”

In response to flooding around the park, Liverpool City Council closed nearby roads in reaction to the floods. Notably, due to flood conditions, Brookfield Drive off Lower Lane and Lower Lane—from East Lancs Road to Fazakerley Hospital— were temporarily blocked.

Additionally, wetlands had previously been created in an attempt to increase the park’s resistance to floods. By serving as organic filtration systems, these wetlands enhance water quality and store floodwater. In order to reduce the risk of flooding and improve local biodiversity, the Croxteth Park Wetland project was finished in 2021.

Visitors to Croxteth Country Park are encouraged to stay informed about weather conditions and adhere to any safety advisories issued by local authorities
