A study by alcohol change UK found that a staggering 1/4 Brits are taking part in dry January this year. This breaks the record of 9 million in 2023. But why are so many people saying goodbye to a pint this January?
The leading reason comes down to cost cutting, nearly a quarter of participants are doing so to save money. Followed by 18% wanting to improve sleep and 16% wanting to improve their overall health.
Drinking alcohol is proven to increase anxiety and put strain on our physical and mental health.
The study also found that 35% of men and 22% of women drink more than the recommended weekly limit of 14 units per week.
Considering this, only 9% of people doing dry January are doing so to improve their relationship with alcohol. Showing Brits really do love to drink.
Dr Richard Piper, CEO at Alcohol Change UK, said: “More of us are connecting the dots between the alcohol we drink and the impact it has on our health, well being and quality of life. From headaches and hangovers, to spending more money that we’d like, our research provides a strong picture of the reason why so many of us are ready to rethink our relationship with alcohol.”
Millions of people are taking control of their drinking habits with a nice 31-day break.
