Saturday was supposed to mark the final-ever Merseyside derby at Goodison Park, but Storm Darragh has forced the game to be postponed later.
Before Everton leaves their illustrious old home of 132 years and moves into a new 52,888-seat stadium on Bramley-Moore Dock in the summer, Liverpool was scheduled to make their final Premier League trip to Goodison Park on Saturday lunchtime.
The Toffees announced the game’s cancellation just four hours before kick-off due to the growing threat to safety the storm may cause.
A short statement on social media read: “Today’s Merseyside derby at Goodison Park has been postponed due to adverse weather conditions.”
Storm Darragh brought hazardous 90 mph winds and torrential rain to areas of the UK, prompting the Met Office to issue its most severe red weather warning on Friday.
Over the course of the weekend there has been major disruptions with trains delayed and cancelled, trees and debris on roads and even roof damage across homes in Merseyside.
The red alert is the first of its kind to be issued since Storm Isha in January.
On the pitch, the Reds were looking to bounce back after a disappointing but thrilling 3-3 draw away to Newcastle, while the Blues were hoping to build on an impressive and much-needed 4-0 victory over fellow strugglers Wolves.
Both clubs have expressed their disappointment for the fans but assert that the safety of fans, players, and staff remains the number one priority.
