School pupils across Merseyside will be wearing odd socks today in honour of Anti-Bullying Week. The Anti-Bullying Association organised Odd Sock Day to celebrate individuality and uniqueness.
Odd Socks Day began in 2017 but is even more prevalent this year due to new research from the ABA that suggests more than 1 in 5 children face frequent bullying. In 2023 over 5 million children, 1,000s of parents, 100s of workplaces and lots of celebrities and influencers got involved.
St Mary’s Catholic Infant and Junior Academy have arranged a ‘respect playlist’ in which different songs are played on the playground each morning.
Jess Murray, a teacher at St Mary’s Infant and Junior Academies said: “The schools are participating in antibullying week this week and focusing on ‘respect.’ To celebrate our differences and uniqueness, as a school we are all wearing odd socks on Tuesday. The songs we are playing every morning from our ‘respect playlist’ all promote friendship, kindness and diversity. The children have enjoyed taking part in our beautiful kindness assemblies and creative activities to encourage and express individuality.”
Odd Socks Day signifies the first day of Anti-Bullying Week, where schools across the country will spend the week focusing on stopping bullying within schools and resources pupils can access if they are being bullied.
