Members of the National Education Union (NEU) held strikes this morning (Tuesday) at the Mallory Building, Birkenhead.

They walked out as part of a row over workload and pay for Special Educational Needs and Disability (SEND) staff.

Bora Oktas, regional officer for the NEU, said: “The employer is more interested in its public image than the actual issues within the SEND department and how to resolve those issues.

“They have only met with us twice: the first meeting on 7 October lasted only eight minutes; and the second meeting on 24 October lasted only 19 minutes.

“In both meetings, the employer said no more than a few words and concluded the meetings without any commitment or plan. They have paid only lip service to negotiations so far.

“They are lying to us, they are not interested in resolving this dispute”

Strikes lasted from 7.30am-10am. However most staff at the council were not part of the walkout and attended work as normal.

The council said it had “accelerated the pace of making wide-ranging improvements”, including a restructure of its SEND services and an extra £4m in funding.
