Tomorrow (Wednesday) is ‘Mischief Night’, also known as ‘Mizzy Night’ on Merseyside. It has been described as ‘The Purge of the North West’ as it can often be a night full of vandalism.

Some people use the excuse of ‘Mizzy Night’ to engage in anti-social behaviour, ranging from eggs being smashed at windows to fireworks being set off near people and houses.

Mischief Night has been recorded happening since the 1830s in the North West, but was tamer – such as throwing cabbage stalks at neighbours – but since then it has become more violent.

People are advised to make sure they lock their doors and shut their blinds, curtains and stay inside, or if they have a ring door bell to keep it on.

Sam Douras, 21, a Liverpool resident, said: “Young kids like to get together and cause mayhem. The wrong mentality comes around this time this year.

“Fireworks being sold is very dangerous but this time of year – it goes a little bit too crazy.”
